Perry was born to actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first TV roles were two appearances as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in The ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mom. She did not consider a career in acting after reaching adulthood because her parents were worried about the detrimental effects that stress could cause. Perry says she didn't want to perform in highschool but decided to start playing as a way to make friends while at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. After graduating Perry moved in New York to search for television work landing small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California where she found acting jobs. She appeared on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. The show featured their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played nine roles in The Family, an ABC drama The Family, in 2016. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on ABC's thriller about politics Scandal which starred her father. The actress was also featured on her role on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The actress was chosen for the role in spite of her strong family connection to the character.
